You All Wanna Know What My School Looks Like

Well I can’t take pictures there…but here is a description…

Its got 2 sections..known as the Arabic section..and the English section..

I go to the English section otherwise known as the international section…It has about at least 1,500 students alltogether…From 1st grade to 12th grade..

Theres a place we buy food (known as the canteen) we either bring lunch or buy food….

The food offered at this school:

The stuff offered usually( some days the “canteen” is empty) :

- Cheese croissant

- Plain croissant

- pizza

-A good variety of Galaxy brand chocolates

-orange juice (full of sugar)

-strawberry Capri Sonne (note the misspelling ..done purposely as they dont sell the american Capri-Sun)

-Water

-Apple juice(filled with Sugar)

Stuff sometimes offered(rarely):

-Stuffed grape leaves

-Cheese Fatayer

-Zaatar Fatayer

-Snickers, Twix, M

Sometimes cheap cookies are sold..Note all these products are packaged outside and not fresh…some of the stuff happen to be expired…The only fresh stuff is the Fatayer..

I did eat half a package of weird tasting M&Ms when i found out that the M&Ms were like 2 yr expired… :(

Ok now thats the food..

If your class is lucky you get 1 P.E. Lesson a week and 1Art lesson a week..

in grades 7-10 you take about 15 subjects

from 11-12 you take about 11..

The gym has a wooden stage built in it..So we can only use half of the gym…

We play basketball once or twice a year…If your lucky you can play soccer like twice in the year..

In break time elected people (called prefects) kick people out of the school…I am one of those prefects this year…although i don’t agree with kicking people out of school…

We have teachers and students from all over the world…So we can see racism and Bias almost everyday at sometime..

We have 2 breaks 1st one is at 9:40am for 20 mins if the teacher leaves the class on time….2nd break is at 12:00 its Salah break and we pray at that time..the break is like15 mins…

If your lucky in this school you could get yourself a locker which costs 200 riyals or $53.33..

Half of the year the gym is used for IGCSE (british council) Exams..

We usually have 3 competitions in this school…One for math…one for science…and Debate..

SAT exam is not offered at this school…only the PSAT is offered along with the IG exams

Most teachers give us homework almost daily…

We have scheduled quizes, exams, and Finals…only a week apart from each other ..

So its like this

A week of school..

2 weeks of Quizes

A week (or maybe half a week)

Midterm exams

A week of school

Quizes again

A week of school..

Mid years..End of term finals

..

Thats how it goes..

We have a project for each subject and for each project there must be a powerpoint presentation, a brochure, a webpage, and a poster…

We do our projects in groups…

We decorate our classes ourselves…

The bathrooms are not always clean(most of the time they are dirty)

There is usually no soap in the bathroom..and the floors are usually wet..

The walls are dirty…and so are the desks..

Usually in the back of classes u will find stacks of books because students can’t carry a bag full of books..

A lot of the books we study from (we as in 11th graders) are college books..

If your lucky the Projector in your class works…most of the time they don’t work…

Internet is not allowed to be used at school…even though some people use it..

We get kicked out of classes even when we are in grades 8-12..

We stay in our class and the teacher comes to us most of the times..

oh and there ARE NO MAKE UPS IN THIS SCHOOL..you can’t retake a test

We rarely ever get to see stuff happen with chemicals in the chemistry lab…we never see anything interesting in Physics..

We see nice stuff in Bio though..

We all go to different Arabic classes depending on your level..

In this school grades are everything

…And teachers achieve their main goal…Stressing the student till they hate school…and this country…

Imaginary Numbers…?

A few days ago we had a our math mid-term ..As usual first thing in the morning…so we take the exam it went OK …anyway…

A few lessons after the exam we have a math lesson…So here it goes…

The teacher starts talking about some radical -20….Of course being a regular calculator user…I am wondering “What is that lady talking about?” And she goes on…I have a headache so I can’t concentrate properly, but she is still talking about radical (square root) of negative numbers…So I take out my calculator and try Square root of -4 and all it says is syntax error…But the teacher is talking about radical negative numbers….So I look at the board still wondering….So I just sit and listen since she always has a lot to say about math…Then someone says something like “there isn’t a solution to that, miss” then the teacher says “EXACTLY!!! Because these are Imaginary Numbers” ………………….????

Imaginary numbers …Oh Allah please help me understand why we are studying imaginary numbers…

After the lesson is over and the teacher leaves…I’m still wondering what the teacher was talking about..I get the concept and all but ….why do we need to study imaginary numbers…

The only logical answer that came to me is that someone had this AMAZING imagination…..numbers that don’t exist….and now someone elses amazing imagination thought it looked suitable in our Algebra 2 math book…

Am I right?…..I hope not….

Now here’s for the new part I’ll start adding to my blog posts…

A daily Haadith or Ayah that inspired me….Maybe even an excerpt from a  book or a saying by a famous sheikh…

Whoever cheated are not from amongst us (Muslims)”.

It is true ..So watch out ….especially those people taking exams these days…
